Water safety: our 13 tips to follow

Water safety: 13 tips from Swim Stars

Water safety is everyone’s business. Fish can live and breathe in water, but humans need air to breathe. In fact, people drown when too much water enters their lungs. As a result, the lungs cannot get oxygen into the bloodstream and your brain may be irreversibly damaged.

Water safety is paramount

Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children under the age of 14. It can happen very quickly, sometimes less than 2 minutes after entering the water, not enough time for someone to help you.

Many drownings and near-drownings occur when a child accidentally falls into a pool. But accidents can happen anywhere, at a friend’s house or at your home,
so you need to know how to stay safe around water.

Technical safety devices can be a solution to make bathing safer
. But nothing is more effective than learning to swim to gain independence.

To prevent swimming and drowning accidents,
Swim Stars launches the S.A.F.E water safety program for schools
. And it is the mascot Poulpy who teaches the children to be safe in and out of the water.

S.A.F.E. also provides valuable advice for all ages to prevent swimming accidents
. How to be safe? How to react in case of difficulties at the ocean? What to do if you witness a drowning? Why do you prefer supervised swimming areas? Why do I have to be careful about what I eat and drink before swimming?

Why should you always swim with your children? Coach Swann answers you!

The Mommy for Life blog offers
9 water safety tips
to go further.

Coach Swann: “you should always bathe at the same time as your children”

For everyone’s safety:“always bathe at the same time as your children

Swann, sports coach for the first swim training network Swim Stars, takes the time to answer questions and remind us of an important safety rule for everyone.

Before Swim Stars

I worked at Club Med as a lifeguard, then I stopped to move to Paris. Today, I work in a private pool in Versailles.

During Swim Stars

I came to Molitor to give lessons in the pool of the 5 star hotel. Then I was also a coach at the Villa Saint-Charles to teach Auto-Rescue classes. Finally, I supervised courses in Montparnasse, at the Stanislas College, in a beautiful 25 meter pool.

Safe in the water

It’s fun, but we don’t forget to work! It’s true that I’m a gambler and quite close to the children.

Your favorite sin

I love junk food, candy like the kids, and also baked goods, especially apple pie!

What safety advice would you give to parents?

Safety tip from Swann Swim Stars coach

To avoid drowning: “always swim with your children”.

Thanks for your safety tip Swann! Thanks to you, our little fish will always be safe!

But why is it important to remember this? Because parents can sometimes be lax in their vigilance.

At the approach of the summer, the government had communicated the following message “you hold with them, do not leave them of the eyes”.
France Bleu had listed the good reflexes during the summer 2020
Every year, there are more than 1000 accidental drownings in children under 25 years old.

Every summer, accidental drownings cause about 50 deaths among children under 13 years old. A lack of supervision is noted in one out of two drownings (source: Ministry).

Having a coach to teach my children to swim: our 3 advantages

Why does having a coach to teach my children to swim make all the difference?

Learning to swim requires fun, effort and consistency. To give your children the necessary motivation and every chance to succeed, we believe that the accompaniment of a Swim Stars coach represents 3 main advantages

The 3 advantages of hiring a coach for my child

1. A coach to give you every chance to succeed

Swim Stars coaches will supervise your children during the swimming lesson. Our team is trained in the same pedagogical content and shares common objectives. The goal is to give your child every opportunity to learn to swim. We prefer small groups to involve all the children, with the coach in the water. By being present during the swim lesson, the parent can also observe our approach and use it as inspiration to adopt the right attitude.

However, being a coach is a job and the natural authority he or she has is necessary to pass on knowledge to your child. In the same way that you can’t become a school teacher, you can’t replace the coach. She is the only person he will listen to. Your role as a parent is to encourage and play with your child in the water so that swimming becomes a pleasure!

2. To listen and give confidence

The Swim Stars coaches have an essential quality which is listening. It is thanks to our benevolence and at the same time our requirement that we manage to retain our members. We want to get to know you better andaccompany your children in their life journey. To do this, we focus on the good atmosphere of the group to motivate the children, give them the smile and confidence they need to unleash their potential.

“You should always listen to the child if he is well with the coach”.

This is the pedagogical advice given by Emilie, Swim Stars coach, during an interview for the blog.

3. To have a pedagogical follow-up

Having a coach who knows your child well because he trains him every week is the key to progress. Indeed, thanks to the regularity and the pedagogical follow-up, your child will have an exponential progression curve. Then, when your little fish has reached a certain level of comfort and confidence, it may be worthwhile to change coaches.

Indeed, change can be beneficial because it can bring a fresh perspective to make you progress even faster. It is also a way to get the child out of his comfort zone. Because a new coach may have new requirements!

Coach Émilie : “you must always listen to the child if he is well with the coach”

Pedagogy:“you always have to listen to the child if he is good with the coach

Émilie, sports coach for the first swim training network Swim Stars, takes part in the question and answer session and offers a “pedagogical” advice for parents.

Before Swim Stars

I was working in a small swimming pool in Franche-Comté. And today, in addition to Swim Stars, I am responsible for the pool in Reuil-Malmaison.

During Swim Stars

I give classes at Molitor in the pool of the 5 star hotel. It is really good for children because the steps allow them to enter the pool gradually. And kids can work on immersion with the super slide. But for those who want to do a carpet ride on the water, it is also possible!

Pedagogy in the water

I am really in my element. Clearly, I chose this profession because I love water and I love children! These are really my two passions combined into one. I pass on to them something that I have been doing since I was a child. Pedagogy for the little ones has always been at the heart of my work.

Your favorite sin

My favorite sin is Nutella! I have to not buy a jar of Nutella or I eat it like yogurt with a spoon in a week.

What do you think of the pedagogical approach of the SELF-CONSTRUCTION courses?

This is the solution we were missing in the swimming world. That would be my primary motivation if I were a parent. What’s more, they are taught the basics of swimming. And it’s possible from a very young age. Even when a child is very young and scared, I always find a way to reassure them to get them into the water. Indeed, the relationship of trust with the child is essential to achieve this!

What “pedagogical” advice would you like to give to parents?

Always listen to the child if they are comfortable with the coach.

The advantage of Swim Stars is that you can choose your classes and your coach . On the other hand, if the experience is not good, it is not a question of a good or bad coach, it is a question of feeling. Then you can change and try again! It is important to never give up because learning how to save yourself is fundamental.

Thank you very much Emily for this teaching tip!

So to summarize, all our coaches are trained to the Swim Stars pedagogy. The approach is to provide small group classes in a private and comfortable pool with the coach in the water. The presence of the coach is benevolent and reassuring to the children. It allows a quality supervision and a personalized follow-up for each child. It is an ideal formula to be accompanied, to correct and progress.
